Beautifully Broken

I am broken like a mirror shattered on the ground

Tiny pieces of my soul scattered all around

But no one stops to fix me

To pick me up and mend me

They just walk by so carefully trying not to fall

All they do is point and stare

Dancing around me with ease and care

Trying desperately not to bleed

On the shards of my glass I leave

They just walk away leaving with not a care at all

I try to bring myself back together again

But some pieces are missing and some remain

Trying my best with what is there

Some pieces don’t fit and I’m left with empty places and tears

But I walk out into the crowd - imperfect, proud and tall

People murmur quietly as I head for the door

Gawking at the shell of the person I was before

Trying my best not to cry

The sunlight hits me as I look into the sky

As I walk out I am no longer broken glass but a beautiful crystal ball.

I entered into an interracial relationship and found quite quickly how much prejudice is still in the world.  I wrote this poem as a result of that...

People are people, no matter their color

People are people, no matter their age

People are people, no matter their income

What is wrong with people these days?

People are people, whether healthy or sick

People are people, whether religious or not

People are people, whether skinny or plump

People are people, whether you like it or not

People are people, whether great scholars or average

People are people, whether they press one or two

People are people; no matter their sexual preference or gender
